Keep the evidence in the picture

Reddit Image Compression for a Woodworking Repair Log

A repair photograph is useful when readers can see the feature you are discussing. Smaller files help with handling, but an attractive overview cannot replace a clear joint close-up. Prepare a woodworking repair log by preserving context, comparable views, and the specific marks that support your explanation.

The batch image compressor processes supported still files locally and lets you compare the source with an encoded output. Reddit in its selector labels the destination only. It neither checks a community’s composer nor publishes a post. This guide uses a fictional oak cabinet drawer repair to explain which image details to keep, which settings to test, and how to deliver a readable visual record.

Start with the repair question, not the finished reveal

Our fictional cabinet drawer catches near the front of its travel. The maker records a loose runner and a visible split near a fixing point, then documents the repair and the drawer’s fit afterward. The photographs are a log of this particular job, not a universal repair prescription. Decide what readers should be able to inspect: the runner’s location, the split’s visible extent, the fixing arrangement, and the relationship between the drawer and cabinet opening.

Choose a small evidence set before opening the compressor. Here it contains six stills: the cabinet overview, the drawer underside, the split close-up, the prepared joint, the repaired runner, and the drawer fitted again. Each image should add information that is absent from the others. Six near-identical beauty shots create a large batch but a weak explanation. Conversely, one dramatic close-up without an overview leaves readers guessing where the damaged piece belongs.

State the observation that each photograph can support. The split close-up shows a visible line beside the fixing; it does not prove the age of the damage or the strength of the completed repair. The fitted drawer shows alignment at the moment photographed; it does not demonstrate every future use. This distinction helps you choose appropriate detail without asking image compression to preserve an impression of certainty that the underlying record cannot justify.

Keep the repair notes next to the source photographs. Record the image stage, the part shown, and any measurement that will appear in the explanation. If you later decide to omit a process photograph, reread the text that refers to it. A sentence about a marked reference point is not helpful when that point appears only in a discarded file. Editing the evidence set and editing the written log are linked decisions, even though the compressor only handles images.

Make before and after views genuinely comparable

Repeat the camera position for the damaged runner and the repaired runner when you can. Use similar distance, angle, and illumination so the feature remains easy to locate. The purpose is not to manufacture identical photographs; it is to avoid making readers mentally rotate one view and search another. A broad view at one stage and an extreme close-up at the next can make an ordinary repair look like a change in object rather than a change in condition.

Include an identifiable reference such as the cabinet corner, a pencil mark, or the same neighboring fixing. Keep any ruler in the plane of the feature you want to discuss and read its markings in the original before encoding. A ruler somewhere in the frame does not make a measurement reliable. If perspective or focus prevents a defensible reading, state the measurement in the accompanying notes instead of pretending the photo alone establishes it.

Check focus and lighting on the source close-up. Wood grain can look detailed while the split itself lies just outside the sharp area. Side lighting may reveal a line strongly, while diffuse lighting makes it disappear. Document that difference rather than attributing it automatically to a repair or an encoder. If possible, take another clear still before closing the joint or covering the area. No quality setting can recover a feature that was never visible in the source.

Avoid making the after image brighter or more saturated just to make the result feel successful. Consistent presentation makes it easier to distinguish the physical change from the photographic change. Browser canvas export can alter color or profile handling, so compare the downloaded result with the source for finish and tone as well as edges. Keep the originals for later reference. The compressed image is a working publication copy, not an archival replacement for the repair record.

Give the close-up enough pixels to answer the question

An overview and a detail photograph have different resolution needs. The overview must show which runner is involved. The close-up must show the split, fixing edge, and nearby grain. Judge them separately before applying one longest-edge choice. If the important feature occupies a tiny corner of a large photograph, prepare a separate detail crop in an editor. The compressor will not crop around a joint, locate damage, or create a magnified evidence panel for you.

Use the image resizer for a deliberate geometry step when useful, then inspect the resulting file. In the compressor, a longest edge of 0 retains the original oriented dimensions. A nonzero value between 640 and 4096 reduces larger images proportionally and never upscales smaller ones. There is no Reddit-specific automatic size. A 2400 by 1600 detail photograph limited to 1800 on its longest edge becomes 1800 by 1200.

That example keeps three quarters of each side, but only nine sixteenths of the original pixel count. The distinction matters: reducing both dimensions removes more total pixels than the single-edge percentage might suggest. It still does not predict file bytes or visible damage precisely. Flat cabinet faces, busy grain, and printed ruler markings encode differently. Measure the actual output and inspect the feature rather than translating a pixel reduction directly into a promised percentage saving.

If a long full-cabinet photograph makes the joint unreadable on a small screen, increasing encoding quality may not solve the problem. Keep the overview for orientation and add the well-framed close-up for inspection. Resist assembling every stage into a dense contact sheet before compression. A contact sheet can be a useful index, but its tiny panels may prevent readers from studying the very detail the post discusses. Keep individual stills available when their detail carries the explanation.

Choose a working budget and read every target result

Imagine the maker wants a six-image handoff with a 350 KB working budget per still. That is a fictional delivery choice, not a Reddit posting limit. The compressor uses decimal KB, so 350 KB means 350000 bytes. If all six outputs met it, the image files would total no more than 2100000 bytes. A ZIP also includes packaging and companion files, so the archive is not required to equal the sum of the image bytes.

Target-size mode accepts budgets from 10 to 10000 KB for each image. For JPG or WebP it samples qualities 95, 90, 85, and further five-point steps down to 20, choosing the highest sampled quality within budget. Suppose a close-up hypothetically measures 372000 bytes at quality 80 and 341000 at quality 75. The latter fits this example. It is the highest fitting sampled setting, not a claim that every possible quality was evaluated or that the image is visually optimal.

Read the target status beside the image rather than assuming the batch succeeded uniformly. If no sampled JPG or WebP fits, the smallest sampled candidate remains and is marked as a target miss. PNG has one lossless canvas encode and a budget check, with no quality search. Target mode does not reduce dimensions. A busy grain close-up can miss while a plain cabinet overview fits, even though both are useful members of the same repair log.

Open the image compressor again with the difficult close-up in mind. If the fitting output obscures the split edge, allow a larger working budget or try another format before reducing detail further. You can also prepare a better crop from the original, but treat that as a new source decision. The smallest output is not automatically the best evidence, and a successful byte check is not a verdict on whether readers can inspect the repair.

Inspect the joint, not just the total

Test a detail photograph beside its source

Compare grain, pencil marks, and the split edge while reading the actual bytes and target status for that image.

Test formats against grain, pencil marks, and labels

JPG is a reasonable candidate to test for continuous photographic scenes such as the whole cabinet. Start in fixed quality mode at 85 when you want a simple comparison without a target search. The permitted quality range is 20 through 95 in whole percentages. Inspect areas around the split and the small ruler numbers, not only the large wood surfaces. A setting that preserves an appealing overall photograph can still soften the line that readers need to examine.

WebP offers another still encoding candidate. Compare the actual output bytes and the relevant feature at the same dimensions. Do not assume its quality number is a universal measure shared with JPG, and do not infer that any file produced by the compressor is accepted by the current Reddit composer. The tool verifies its encoder output type; it does not verify the destination. Use a format that works through your actual native posting path and review that file before sharing.

PNG can be worth testing for an annotated detail with clean arrows, flat labels, or a screenshot of a measurement note. Its output ignores the quality setting because it uses one lossless canvas encode. It can be larger than a photographic alternative. Lossless encoding also does not promise that source metadata, profile information, or all browser color behavior is preserved. Keep the unannotated original separately so a later reader can distinguish what the camera captured from what you added.

Make annotations readable but restrained. An arrow should identify the area without covering the split, and a label should not replace the evidence beneath it. If an annotation layer has transparency, JPG flattens it against the chosen background, white by default; PNG and WebP keep alpha. Inspect the final composite for pale edges or disappearing text. Decide the background in the artwork when it matters, rather than hoping the eventual viewer will supply the one you imagined.

Compare the output where false detail would mislead

Select each image and use the original/output comparison. The 100 percent view in a bounded scroll region lets you inspect actual pixels rather than relying only on a fitted overview. Look for block patterns, smeared grain, bright outlines around a dark split, and softened pencil marks. These are reasons to investigate a candidate, not proof that a particular setting is always wrong. Compare the same region in the source before attributing every visible irregularity to compression.

The useful question is whether an encoding change alters the reader’s interpretation. A small artifact in an empty cabinet side may be unimportant. A dark patch beside the fixing could be mistaken for damage, while a softened split might make a gap look closed. When a critical feature changes character, choose a clearer candidate. Do not use the compressor as a way to make an uncertain repair appear cleaner or to manufacture a visible problem that the source does not establish.

Read measurement markings aloud from the output without checking the original first. Then compare your reading with the source and your repair notes. Ask another person to identify which edge the annotation points to. If the reviewer needs your explanation before they can locate the feature, the image may need a better crop, a different arrow position, or clearer accompanying words. A higher quality setting cannot fix every ambiguity introduced by framing or annotation.

Finally, inspect the whole set at an ordinary viewing size. A detailed close-up should still connect visually to the overview and the final fitted drawer. A small-display preview can help study a lead image alongside its title, but it is not an exact Reddit feed simulation. Check the actual downloaded images in the destination preview too. This workflow provides visual comparison and measured file properties, not a formal quality score or a guarantee about destination processing.

Build an understandable sequence with accurate captions

For this log, lead with the overview or the clearly identified problem, then show the underside, split, preparation, repair, and fitted drawer. Choose the order that makes the explanation easiest to follow, not the order in which files happen to sort. Safe numeric download prefixes avoid filename collisions but do not create a publication sequence. Keep a short image-role list so someone transferring the files can reconstruct the intended order without guessing from camera timestamps.

Reddit’s available post options vary by community. Open the intended community’s current composer to see which image route is available before finalizing the handoff. If it offers a multi-image presentation, review the order and the wording associated with each still. If you use images within a text explanation, check their placement against the relevant paragraphs. The destination label in the compressor does not inspect these options, apply community-specific settings, or make a file uploadable.

Write captions that identify stage and observation. “Runner before repair; split visible beside front fixing” is more useful than “the problem.” “Drawer fitted after repair” is more precise than a claim that a photograph proves permanent success. Include any measurement in the written explanation with its unit and object. A ruler that is hard to read in a compressed image should not become the only record of a dimension that matters to the discussion.

Check the title against the evidence set. A title about a drawer runner should not lead readers to expect a full cabinet restoration that the pictures never document. If you use the social media specs checker for additional local file measurements, treat those findings according to their scope. They do not verify your woodworking explanation or assemble a Reddit post. Keep factual review, file review, and native post composition as separate checks with a clear owner.

Keep a reproducible record beyond the browser session

A batch can contain up to 15 supported still JPG, PNG, or WebP files, with limits of 20 MB each and 80 MB total. Source dimensions are bounded at 25 megapixels and 8192 pixels per side. Animated media, GIF, video, SVG, HEIC, corrupt files, and unsupported inputs are rejected. These are the compressor’s browser processing limits, not Reddit allowances. For a larger repair record, curate the relevant stills or process separate batches while keeping their roles documented.

Processing stays local to the browser. The original File objects remain in memory until clear or tab close, and your disk sources are not overwritten. A failed or cancelled import preserves the previous valid batch. There is no project import/export or autosave in this version, so keep the repair originals, editable annotations, and notes separately. Sequential decoding and encoding help bound processing work, but they do not turn an open tab into a durable project archive.

Download one selected output for an individual correction, or the ZIP for all encoded images with CSV and README companions. Copy summary and CSV are useful for recording settings and target statuses. The PDF includes results, settings, a table, and the selected comparison; its images are review thumbnails, not replacement camera sources. If settings change or processing is cleared or cancelled, generate fresh results and exports. Label the approved revision so an earlier close-up cannot quietly reappear in the finished log.

Use the free tools directory for other preparation tasks when needed, while keeping publishing separate. SMTasker’s current Reddit actions are upvote and comment, not automatic image posting. This compressor has no app connection that publishes the repair gallery. The useful final result is an identifiable set of stills whose evidence survives your review, accompanied by accurate notes and retained originals. That is a practical handoff, not a promise of votes, reach, or identical appearance after upload.

Questions about Reddit Image Detail

Should I compress every repair photo to the same file size?

Not necessarily. An overview and a split close-up serve different purposes, and busy grain can require more bytes than a plain panel at similar dimensions. A shared target is convenient for testing, but inspect every result and allow an exception when detail matters. The tool checks each image against its own selected working budget, not a combined post allowance.

Can a compressed photo prove that a joint is fully repaired?

It can document visible appearance, not establish strength or long-term performance. Keep the original and describe what the photograph actually shows. Compare the same region before and after encoding so artifacts do not resemble cracks or hide a gap. Record any separate observations or tests in your repair notes rather than claiming the image establishes them.

Why was my annotated close-up larger after export?

Re-encoding does not guarantee savings. The source format, added labels, dimensions, and selected output format all affect bytes. Read the actual size change and compare alternatives without repeatedly recompressing the last output. Return to the original source for a new test, and keep whichever reviewed file best preserves the evidence within your practical delivery needs.
