Keep parts, steps and notes identifiable without color

Build a Readable Palette for a Reddit Repair Diagram

A useful repair diagram lets readers connect a part, an instruction and a note without decoding a color scheme first. Plan the labels before the palette, check each solid text/background pair, and preserve the same identifiers across light and dark versions. Color can help organize the drawing, but the instructions should still make sense when the hues are hard to distinguish.

Sidebench, a fictional workshop, is preparing a Reddit guide image about a loose pull on a small wooden drawer. Its illustration labels the pull, inner washer and fastening screw, with one note about checking the fitted hardware. Follow its light and dark artwork revisions in the Brand Color Palette and Contrast Checker. The tool checks colors, not the mechanical correctness of the repair.

Choose one repair question and stable part names

Sidebench’s diagram answers one narrow question: Which parts belong to this illustrated loose drawer pull? The image identifies A: pull, B: inner washer and C: fastening screw. It is not a universal furniture repair chart. The workshop confirms that these parts match its own specimen before preparing the graphic. A palette can clarify that explanation, but it cannot establish whether another drawer has the same fitting or needs the same procedure.

Write the part key in ordinary words before adding color. A reader can then match C in the drawing to C: fastening screw in the note even when the image is printed in black and white. Keep the letters next to their parts and use clear leader lines where space requires them. Avoid assigning one letter to a physical part in one view and a repair step in another.

Separate the step sequence from the part identifiers. In the workshop’s example brief, numbered steps describe inspecting the loose joint, checking the original hardware and reassembling the confirmed fitting. Letters refer to objects; numbers refer to actions. The guide author still needs to validate the actual repair instructions. The color checker does not recommend tools, diagnose damage, choose replacement hardware or provide a tightening specification.

Decide which notes are essential to understanding the picture. Here, Check the fitted hardware before replacing parts belongs near the part key, while Specimen shown from inside the drawer explains the drawing’s viewpoint. These are not decoration. Give them explicit text roles in the palette so they remain readable when the artwork changes from a light surface to a dark one.

Build light and dark views from the same drawing

Prepare two artwork versions of the same labeled diagram: a light view with an opaque #F8FAFC background and a dark view with an opaque #111111 background. Keep the part geometry, letter positions, note wording and reading order identical. This makes the comparison about color roles rather than two different explanations. Save the two artwork files separately so the approved light version is not overwritten during the dark revision.

These are manually designed views, not automatic Reddit theme previews. Selecting Reddit in the checker labels the palette project; it does not connect an account, detect a viewer’s display mode or switch a posted image to match an interface. Contrast math is the same in all nine platform contexts. The artwork’s own solid background remains the background being checked, regardless of the page around it.

Keep the complete working inventory within eight opaque HEX colors. Sidebench uses seven: #F8FAFC for the light surface, #111111 for the dark surface and light-view main text, #374151 for light-view notes, #E5E7EB for dark-view text, #0E7490 for a blue reference label, #C2410C for an orange check label and #F6E05E for a note highlight. Name roles rather than relying on hue names alone.

Do not invert every color mechanically. A darker note color that works on the light surface may merge into the dark surface, while a bright highlight may need dark lettering in both versions. Write a short mapping: light notes use dark gray; dark notes use pale gray; highlighted notes use near-black on yellow. For a general role system, see the color roles and contrast guide.

Check the note labels before the large step numbers

Begin with the smallest explanatory text. On the light surface, note gray #374151 against #F8FAFC displays approximately 9.851:1. The same note gray against the dark surface #111111 falls to approximately 1.832:1. Simply replacing the background creates an unreadable note even though the lettering, size and words have not changed. This is the first repair in the two-view example.

For the dark version, change the note foreground to pale gray #E5E7EB. Against near-black, its ratio is approximately 15.252:1. The light version can retain its original dark gray. Near-black main text on the light surface is approximately 18.048:1. These results define separate permissions for the two views; they do not require one text color to work everywhere in the combined palette.

Use the WCAG 2.2 text thresholds accurately: AA normal text needs 4.5:1 and large text 3:1; AAA normal needs 7:1 and large 4.5:1. Large refers to at least 24 CSS pixels regular or roughly 18.667 CSS pixels bold in that reference context. A source canvas with large-looking letters does not guarantee that a resized guide image meets that size condition. Small part keys and notes deserve the normal-text target.

The tool displays ratios to three decimals but compares the unrounded values with each threshold. A result slightly below 4.5 remains below it even if the display rounds to 4.500. Record the status with the pair, not an independently rounded verdict. These text-pair checks do not certify the complete diagram, its repair advice, the post’s accessibility or the visibility of every line in the drawing.

Give reference and check notes distinct readable roles

Sidebench uses a blue label reading Reference: original fitting and an orange label reading Check: match the installed hardware. On the light background, blue #0E7490 has approximately 5.121:1 contrast and orange #C2410C approximately 4.949:1. Both meet AA normal text for those selected solid pairs. The words Reference and Check explain the categories even if the reader does not distinguish the hues.

On the dark surface, the same blue gives approximately 3.524:1 and the same orange approximately 3.646:1. Neither reaches AA normal text. Do not defend them as small notes that matter less; their size makes the normal-text result especially relevant. Use pale-gray text with the explicit category words in the dark version, or put the note on a separately tested opaque highlight surface.

For a yellow highlighted note, near-black #111111 on #F6E05E is approximately 14.156:1. Keep that exact text/fill relationship in both artwork views. If the highlight is only an outline with the page showing through, the yellow is not the text background. Select the actual opaque surface behind the letters rather than whichever accent is visually closest to the note.

Use the full seven-color matrix to inspect all 49 combinations, including identical pairs at 1:1. Read it as an inventory of possible pairings, not a quality score for the palette. The blue label on the light surface and its pale-gray replacement on the dark surface are different planned uses. A successful pairing elsewhere in the matrix does not rescue the one that a particular note actually uses.

Find the note that breaks in the dark view

Compare both diagram text roles

Enter your light surface, dark surface and label colors, then check each note against the background it actually uses.

Use extraction to gather candidates, not diagnose parts

If Sidebench has an older approved diagram, it can open a local PNG, JPEG or WebP to gather candidate colors. Choose two to eight requested swatches and an explicit opaque matte. Extraction processes a resized browser sample with sides capped at 128 pixels. It returns representative colors, not exact brand recognition or an exhaustive record of the original drawing’s pixels. Manual opaque HEX entry remains the reliable route for known design values.

A fine orange leader or a tiny blue part label may disappear into the representative sample. That does not show that the feature was absent or unimportant. The extractor does not read labels, identify a screw, understand repair steps or determine which color belongs to a caution. Assign those roles yourself after reviewing the design. It also does not calculate percentages of the original image’s area from its palette output.

Fully transparent pixels are ignored, while partially transparent edges are composited against the declared matte before sampling. Choose the light matte when gathering candidates for the light view and record that choice. A dark matte can yield different edge representatives from the same transparent artwork. Neither result replaces a direct check of the exact opaque text and background values that will appear in the finished diagram.

A degenerate sample with one unique visible representative receives a clearly labeled manual black or white helper so the editable palette still contains two colors. The helper is not an image finding. Fully transparent input is refused. The project saves colors and declared extraction metadata without retaining the source image; when you adjust an extracted HEX value, its edited state should accompany the resulting design revision.

Make the instructions survive monochrome reading

Set the colors aside and read the part key literally. A is still the pull, B the inner washer and C the fastening screw. Each note names the object it concerns. If an instruction says tighten the orange part, rewrite it to use the established part name and letter. This improves the explanation before any color adjustment and avoids making readers infer a physical action from a visual category.

Use other visible distinctions when they serve the drawing. A solid leader can identify a part, a numbered arrow can indicate an action and a dashed outline can mark an earlier position, provided the key explains each convention. Keep those conventions stable across both views. The checker does not judge line patterns, arrow direction or whether a leader appears to touch the wrong component; inspect that geometry in the artwork itself.

Try a specific handoff exercise with someone who did not draw the guide. Ask them to locate B, name it and point to the sentence that explains why it is shown. In this example, the answer should connect the inner washer to the hardware-check note, not to the orange accent alone. Then ask them to follow the numbered sequence while naming each referenced part. A pause at C may reveal that its leader ends between the screw and washer, even though its text has excellent contrast. Repair that endpoint in both artwork versions and repeat the short reading exercise. You are checking the connection between words and objects, not awarding an accessibility score.

Create a grayscale viewing copy in your normal image editor or inspect a monochrome print when that fits the workflow. This is a manual reading exercise, not an output mode or simulation supplied by the palette checker. Ask whether the reader can follow the numbered order, distinguish note categories and locate every referenced part without naming a hue. Preserve the full-color master rather than replacing it with the review copy.

Do not interpret success in grayscale as proof of complete accessibility or universal color-vision readability. It answers a narrower question: does the instruction depend unnecessarily on color? Contrast, text size, visual complexity, descriptive text and the correctness of the repair still need their own attention. For evidence-heavy artwork with values rather than components, the data graphic color guide covers direct labeling and readable source notes.

Inspect both saved views at their actual reading size

Apply the approved HEX values in the drawing editor and open both saved artwork files. Start with the light view, then inspect the dark view without changing the reading scale. Check the smallest note, every part letter and the ends of leader lines. An enlarged working canvas can hide crowding that becomes obvious when the diagram is viewed as a compact image in a discussion.

Look at each note’s real background. If a label crosses from the solid page onto a shaded component, one selected background no longer describes its whole line. Move the note to a known surface or give it an opaque panel. Gradients, photographic textures, shadows and translucent highlights are outside this exact solid-pair check. Extracting a palette from the finished drawing does not turn the tool into a full-background analyzer.

Verify that the two versions still contain the same repair information. A dark-view edit should not silently remove the viewpoint note or rename the washer. Put the revision identifier in the workshop’s working files and accompanying explanation so readers can identify the current guide. If someone reports a wrong part label, update the actual artwork and text rather than treating a passing color report as a reason to leave the error.

Prepare a text version of the part key and the relevant instructions alongside the image. A PNG cannot supply selectable instructions simply because its colors were checked. The palette report also does not generate alternative text, native Reddit descriptions or a mechanical troubleshooting response. The guide author remains responsible for giving readers an understandable explanation and for reviewing the actual discussion context before sharing the repair material.

Hand over the two palettes without losing the drawing

Save separate JSON revisions for the chosen light and dark pairs, even if both retain the same seven-color inventory. Give them descriptive titles such as Drawer pull diagram, light notes and Drawer pull diagram, dark notes. JSON restores the colors, pair, sample and declared extraction metadata when present, not the original drawing. Keep both artwork masters in the workshop’s project files; the checker has no autosave or persistent project storage.

PNG exports provide palette and selected-pair proofs, not versions of the repair diagram. PDF supplies the palette, complete matrix, method and extraction metadata, with rasterized review content. Keep CSV or JSON for selectable records. CSS provides reusable color definitions, and copy supports a short role brief. None of these actions edits the drawing or changes the colors in an already shared Reddit image.

Attach the role decisions to the handoff: dark gray notes on the light surface; pale-gray notes on the dark surface; near-black on the yellow note highlight in both. Ordinary site analytics are separate from local processing, which uses no API, AI service or native profile connection. Other preparation tools remain available in the free tools directory, but they do not automatically receive this palette or its repair explanation.

For a separate ongoing account workflow, SMTasker’s Reddit automation tools support comments, post upvotes and comment upvotes with schedules, limits and activity review. These actions run through a connected Android device with the Windows or macOS client. The free checker does not publish the guide, import its palette into an account routine or verify the advice in a planned comment.

Questions about Reddit Guide Image Palette

Will Reddit automatically use my dark diagram for dark-mode readers?

The checker does not arrange that behavior. Light and dark are separate artwork versions you prepare and manage yourself, not native theme variants supplied through the project selector. Choose which image to share in your normal workflow and inspect its own opaque background and labels rather than assuming the surrounding interface will change them.

Can a note pass contrast but still point to the wrong part?

Yes. The pair calculation does not inspect leader lines, part geometry or mechanical instructions. Check that the letter, part name, line endpoint and related step agree in the actual drawing. A readable but incorrect label needs an editorial repair, not a different palette score.

Does the matrix confirm that the diagram works in monochrome?

No. It compares opaque solid pairs, not a grayscale version of the complete drawing. Review a monochrome copy separately and confirm that names, letters, numbers and line conventions carry the instructions without color. That exercise complements contrast checks but is not a complete accessibility assessment.
