Show the change without changing the comparison

Before and After Photo Collage: A Clear Comparison

Make the change easy to inspect by giving the earlier and later photographs comparable space, framing, and context in one still image.

Use the Photo Collage Maker for two supplied still photographs. Choose the layout and crops yourself; the tool does not detect changes, align subjects automatically, or verify a transformation claim.

Define the change the two pictures actually show

A before and after collage is a comparison, not simply two attractive photographs placed together. Decide what visible change the reader should inspect, then choose pictures that support that specific claim. A different camera position, lighting setup, or background can create an impression of change that has little to do with the work itself. The maker cannot distinguish those causes. Your job is to preserve enough common context that the reader can compare the subject honestly. Start with a narrow sentence about what is visible rather than a broad promise about quality, value, speed, or performance that the images cannot prove.

Consider Mara, a fictional workshop owner documenting the repainting of a wooden chair. The earlier photograph shows the chair with worn green paint; the later photograph shows the same chair in a red finish. Both include the full back, seat, and legs against the same workshop wall. Her goal is to show the visible finish change in a single image for a project summary. The photographs do not establish structural condition, durability, or how long the work took. Those subjects need separate records. This invented example keeps the visual task modest: make the two states of the same object easy to inspect.

Write an acceptance test before arranging the pair: “Both whole chairs remain visible at a comparable apparent size, with the earlier state on the left and the later state on the right.” That test gives you a reason to reject a dramatic crop of the red seat even if it looks striking. It would not show the same evidence as a complete earlier chair. If the desired claim concerns only the seat finish, select two comparable seat photographs instead. The scope can be broad or narrow, but the two sides should answer the same question. Equal purpose matters more than visual spectacle.

Give both states equal space and a stable order

For two photographs, Horizontal strip creates a straightforward left and right arrangement. Put the earlier chair first and the later chair second using Move earlier or Move later. This order belongs to the collage; it does not depend on file dates, camera names, or automatic chronology detection. Review the actual images after reordering. A convincing caption cannot repair a reversed pair. Mara uses one image per state rather than adding a third decorative detail because the equal pair is the clearest expression of her goal. The tool uses every included photo, so additional images always change the composition rather than sitting in reserve.

Landscape at 1600 by 900 pixels gives the two chairs room beside each other. Square at 1200 by 1200 is another preparation option if the complete source frames need more height within their panels. Portrait is 1080 by 1350 and Vertical is 1080 by 1920. Compare the real subject inside these choices rather than treating any canvas as a required destination format. The downloaded image has the selected dimensions, but another application may display it differently. This is one flattened comparison image, not an interactive slider or a pair of separate images that the viewer can swipe between at native resolution.

Avoid Hero left and Hero top when equal visual weight is important. They deliberately give the first image more space, which would favor the earlier state in this example. Balanced grid also provides two side by side tiles when only two photographs are present, but Horizontal strip makes the intended row structure easy to remember. Vertical stack is a valid alternative for an above and below comparison; if you choose it, update the wording to match. There is no automatic Before or After stamp. The meaning comes from the selected order, the shared text you enter, and the surrounding explanation that accompanies the result.

Prepare sources from comparable viewpoints

Before import, compare the two source photographs outside the collage. Look at camera height, distance, angle, background lines, and the position of the chair feet. Mara marked the camera position on the floor before taking the earlier picture and returned to that spot for the later one. This helps the comparison without making it a scientific measurement. If your sources already differ substantially, say so in the accompanying explanation or choose a narrower claim. The maker does not correct perspective, rotate a chair into alignment, normalize lighting, or determine whether the two objects are actually the same. Equal tiles do not perform those checks.

Choose Add photos for local still PNG, JPEG, or WebP files. Each input must fit within 15 MiB, a 12000 pixel maximum edge, and 40 megapixels. The prepared working photograph is limited to a 1200 pixel edge, one megapixel, and one MiB as PNG. Larger sources can be reduced to meet those limits, while the originals remain unchanged on your device. Check the actual prepared dimensions and look at narrow chair spindles after preparation. A large original does not guarantee that every scratch remains visible in the working copy, and later enlargement cannot recover detail that preparation has already discarded from it.

If one source includes much more empty wall than the other, prepare a suitable copy separately or decide whether Fit whole image can still show both chairs clearly. The Image Resizer can support a separate framing task before import. Do not stretch one chair to imitate the proportions of the other. Matching the output panel size is not the same as matching the subject size, and changing the shape would undermine the comparison. Preserve your untouched captures elsewhere so later questions about the framing can be answered from the original photographs rather than only from the cropped finished collage.

Protect the shared evidence when adjusting crops

Start both photos in Fit whole image. It centers the full prepared photograph within the tile, leaving background space when the source and tile have different shapes. For the chair example, showing the entire back and all four feet is more useful than filling every edge. Select each picture through Photo to edit and compare the seat height and overall outline by eye. The tool does not link the two photographs or calculate their relative scale. If the whole chairs look very different in size despite comparable source frames, revisit the sources and camera positions before using a tighter crop to disguise the difference.

Fill tile is suitable when both sources contain generous matching borders that can be removed without losing evidence. It covers the tile and crops excess source edges. Start at Zoom 100; Zoom can increase to 300. Horizontal focal point and Vertical focal point range from 0 to 100 and position the photograph within the available crop. Pointer dragging inside a selected Fill tile photograph adjusts that focal point, with numeric fields providing a keyboard alternative. These are manual composition controls, not subject detection or automatic alignment. A horizontal value of 50 means a centered crop, not a verified centerline through the chair.

Apply comparable judgment to both sides rather than copying numbers blindly. Identical focal settings can produce different visible framing when source dimensions or subject positions differ. Mara keeps the feet and backrest equally clear, leaving a little room beyond both outlines. Center crop gives a centered starting point if a Fill tile experiment becomes unhelpful. In Fit whole image, Zoom and focal controls are inactive, although valid saved values can remain for a later mode switch. Do not interpret that inactive zoom as a hidden scale correction. The result should make an honest difference visible, not use unequal cropping to make the later chair seem larger or cleaner.

After the comparison is reviewed

Add only the labels and spacing the pair needs

Use the shared Title for the subject, such as “One chair, a new finish,” and Footer for a short reading key, such as “Left: before repainting | Right: after repainting.” These are not individual tile captions, and Photo name does not appear on the artwork. If you use Vertical stack instead, change the key to above and below. Text should remove ambiguity without making unsupported claims. Mara avoids “restored to perfect condition” because her pictures show a finish change, not a complete assessment of the chair. The label tells the reader what the photographs represent while leaving broader conclusions to separate evidence.

Title allows up to 80 characters and Footer up to 60, with fixed bands reserved outside the photo tiles. The renderer fits complete text or refuses a layout that cannot remain readable; it does not quietly remove the last words. Keep the key short enough to understand immediately. A lengthy account of sanding, coating, and drying belongs beside the image, not in the narrow footer. If a reserved band crowds the chairs, clear that field or choose more suitable canvas proportions; a shorter nonempty phrase keeps the same band. Aim for a readable comparison with enough text to establish the two states.

Try Gap 16, Margin 32, and Corner radius 0 as a plain starting point. The controls use reference units that scale with the canvas, so do not read them as identical output pixel distances in every format. A clear central gap separates the states without implying a missing third panel. Square corners preserve the full rectangular evidence, especially if a chair foot approaches a tile corner. Choose one of the five opaque Color themes by checking the contained background areas around both photographs. The theme changes the composition background, not the paint color, exposure, or white balance of either supplied source image.

Keep revisions tied to the same two states

Give the photos neutral review names such as “Chair earlier” and “Chair repainted.” These names help you select the correct item and understand the inventory; they do not certify the date or identify the object automatically. If Mara finds a sharper later capture, she selects that item and uses Replace photo. The command preserves its slot, order, label, and crop choices. Those saved choices may not suit the new source, so inspect the whole chair immediately afterward. A replacement is not evidence that the image depicts the same state or was taken under the same conditions. That remains a human review responsibility.

Use Add photos only when the comparison genuinely needs another photograph. Adding a sanding stage to Horizontal strip makes three narrower panels and changes the story from a pair to a sequence of states. It still creates one still, not an animation or slideshow. If the original request is before and after, keep the intermediate picture in separate documentation instead. Remove photo also changes the arrangement and can leave only one image, which is not enough to produce collage artwork or review exports. A valid project draft can still be saved with zero or one photo while you obtain the missing source for the pair.

After changing a source, canvas, title, gap, or margin, check both sides again. Compare the visible chair outline, amount of surrounding wall, seat height, and reading key. Any project edit makes earlier export results stale. The PNG already downloaded to your computer remains the old file until you create a new one. If preview preparation is canceled, it stays paused until an explicit edit or recovery action resumes it; Save project does not silently restart the canceled render. Wait for a valid current result, then perform a final comparison against the acceptance sentence rather than approving the layout because the controls contain familiar values.

Share the comparison without sharing hidden source areas

Inspect the entire source before saving an editable project. A workshop receipt outside the visible crop may not appear in the finished collage, but it remains in the full prepared photograph stored by Save project. If that material should not be retained, prepare a separate covered source before import. The Image Redactor can help with manual opaque covers. Corner radius and crop choices are not redaction tools. Source filenames and original metadata are not copied, but that does not make all remaining pixels harmless. Keep the editable project private and share only the materials needed for the comparison task.

Download PNG produces the flattened comparison artwork. Open the saved file outside the editor and inspect both whole chairs, the complete title, the reading key, and the central separation. The output does not contain editable photo layers or a source image attachment behind the visible crop. Download JPEG is a lossy alternative at quality 0.94, so inspect that actual file if you choose it. Both have an opaque composition. The clean output still shows every detail you deliberately left visible, including background objects. It is not a certified record of restoration quality or proof that omitted areas contained nothing relevant to the work.

Download PDF is a review package with the collage proof and complete readable inventory. Its settings and review JSON attachments are image-free; they are not the full editable project and do not contain the uncropped source photographs. The document still shows the collage and labels, so read it before sharing. TXT, CSV, and copy provide the full inventory when someone only needs the composition record. None of these formats verifies the transformation or dates the photographs. Mara sends the approved PNG for the summary and keeps the PDF only when a reviewer needs to examine the framing choices and reading order used for that version.

Preserve a dependable edit and an honest explanation

Save project contains the arrangement and all full prepared uncropped photos needed to reedit it. It does not contain only visible crops, and it may not retain original resolution if the sources were downsized. Store that JSON separately from the public artwork and keep original captures in their own appropriate location. There is no autosave, hosted project, source upload, account login, API, or AI processing behind this maker. Ordinary website resources still load. Local processing describes how the editing works; it does not mean that sharing the project file is safe or that the entire surrounding website operates offline without any requests.

Save before leaving the page. A return through browser back navigation may offer Restore photos when the browser retained page memory, but that requires an explicit action and is not persistent storage. Reloading needs Open project or selecting sources again. When reopening the chair project, verify the two pictures and reading key before making another output. If the later photo is replaced or the canvas changes, the old approval does not automatically apply. Keep a clear version name for the finished image and a brief note about what was reviewed. A file sitting in Downloads is more dependable when its purpose and revision are unambiguous.

Describe the visible change without adding unsupported conclusions. The Alt Text Writer can help organize a separate description of the green chair on the left and red chair on the right, both shown against the workshop wall. Explain any meaningful difference in viewpoint or lighting in the surrounding project summary. If the collage is later used in a social post, document, or video, review that destination separately; the maker does not guarantee acceptance, insert the image, or publish it. Mara finishes with one clear comparison, a private editable source, and wording limited to what the photographs actually support about the visible finish change.

Questions about Before and After Collages

Which layout gives before and after equal space?

For two photos, Horizontal strip creates equal side by side panels, while Vertical stack creates equal above and below panels. Hero layouts deliberately enlarge the first photo and are not equal comparisons.

Will the maker automatically align the two subjects?

No. Choose comparable source viewpoints and review each crop yourself. Matching focal numbers does not establish matching subject size, perspective, or lighting.

Can someone recover cropped areas from my saved files?

Save project contains full prepared uncropped photos, so keep it private. PNG and JPEG are flattened artwork. The PDF shows the collage proof and inventory with image-free attachments, not the uncropped photos or full project.
